Here is an outline of our topics for the following term. So as we know you are keen to take an active part in supporting and discussing your child’s work. The following information will help you explore in more depth the topics covered in Year 5.
General Information
Homework:
- Reading book to be brought in daily, with page numbers and comments filled in by parents, in Reading Record Books
- Spelling words given on a Monday with test on following Friday
- Maths work based on current topic on a Wednesday handed in by following Friday
- English on a Monday handed in by following Wednesday
- Other homework liked to topics may be given with dates for handing in given at the time
P.E. Days: Wednesday (indoor) shorts and t-shirt
Thursday (outdoor) tracksuit and trainers

Novel: ‘The War and Freddy’ Developing Comprehension skills. Using Spelling Journals Recount writing. Newspaper writing. Poetry relating to WW2. Chronological writing related to past experiences. Letter writing as evacuees. Exploring Myths and Legends. |

Mathematics |
The ‘Abacus’ scheme of work will be used for the majority of topics covered. Maths games using Interactive Whiteboard. Also we will have ‘maths investigation weeks’ each term. |

Ourselves and other Animals: Looking at Body Systems, healthy eating and general well being. |

Welsh |
Following our Year 5 scheme ‘Tra’d Moch.’ Stori Nadolig: a range of activities related to Christmas and the Nativity. |

Information Technology |
Desktop Publishing and Word processing to create newspapers and posters. Modelling effects on screen using procedures to create a range of shapes and patterns. |

Design Technology |
Designing and making a section of rag mat similar to the ones used during World War II. |
|
History |
World War II: Looking at all aspects from when and why it started through to its end. |
|
Geography |
Looking at countries of origin when exploring a range of myths and legends. |
|
Religious Education |
‘Bible Explorer’ : a scheme which looks in depth at the Old Testament. Study of how the Jewish people suffered during World War II. |

Art |
Creating Portraits: looking at features of the face, shading and texture. Sketching head and shoulders. |
|
Music |
‘Music Express’ an interactive music scheme. Cyclic Patterns exploring rhythm and pace. Recorders (Use Recorder Boppers series) |

Physical Education |
Indoor Activities: gymnastic activities, dance. Outdoor Activities: invasion games and football skills. |

Personal & Social Education |
Linked to World War II: Literature based study-Diary of Anne Frank, The War and Freddy, Erika’s Story. Themes-What is an enemy? What is a war? Do people ever win? |
